Two anti-coup protesters were killed by the Burmese soldiers and several others were injured today during the daily protest in the Kachin State capital Myitkyina.

Ko Ko Lay (63) and Zin Min Htet (23) were shot at the head and died on the spot, according to the local witnesses. Some are seriously injured and the police arrested more than a dozen demonstrators.

Hundreds of anti-coup protesters gathered this morning near the St. Columbun Roman Catholic Church in Aung Nan Quarter of the town. They were later encircled by the police soldiers.

A Catholic Father and some nuns were reportedly begging the police and soldiers not to shoot the protesters during the standoff.
