World Kachin requests KIO to implement urban encroachment

The overseas based World Kachin Congress (WKC) yesterday sent a letter to the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) headquartered in Kachin State of northern Burma, appealing for the protection of Kachins citizens living in cities and towns across Kachin and northern Shan State, and take actions against the local authorities whom serving the Burmese military’s coup administration called State Administrative Council (SAC).

WKC requested KIO to give warning and necessary actions against the local Burmese authorities and their subordinates who have been conducting all sorts intimidating against peoples who have been participating in anti-coup demonstration and Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), according to the WKC letter. The Kachin diaspora organization suggested that KIO to expand their territory control by engaging the local indigenous leaders from towns and villages to protect from military rule.

The Vice Chairman of WKC John La Seng told The Kachin Post that the overseas organization is trying give a nudge to KIO to implement the necessary steps to make sure the safety and the security of all Kachin citizens. He said that he also believes the KIO is doing necessary preparation to respond the current political situation.

KIO is one of the biggest ethnic armed organization in the country. It has been fighting for independence Kachinland since 1961. Just after the February 1st military coup in the country, the KIO’s armed wing Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has been re-engaging weeks-long fighting against the Burma Army in northern Shan State.
